More Advice to Your Younger Self | E-Neighborhood Advisor

Our email last week about author Mark Manson got such good feedback, we decided to share some more of the 600 responses he received when he asked his readers ag 37 and over what advice they would give their 30-year-old selves. Here are 3 more of the most common replies.

Be Good to the People You Care About

Last week we included the advice about not spending time with people who don’t treat you well. Conversely, while enforcing stricter boundaries on who we let into our lives, many readers advised to make the time for those friends and family that we do decide to keep close.

“Appreciate those close to you. You can get money back and jobs back, but you can never get time back.” (Anne, 41)

Don’t Be Afraid of Taking Risks, You Can Still Change

Many readers commented on how society tells us that by 30 we should have things “figured out” — our career situation, our dating/marriage situation, our financial situation and so on. But this isn’t true. And, in fact, dozens and dozens of readers implored to not let these social expectations of “being an adult” deter you from taking some major risks and starting over. As someone responded: “All adults are winging it.”

Be Kind to Yourself, Respect Yourself

This one was rarely the central focus of any email, but it was present in some capacity in almost all of them: treat yourself better.

Almost everybody said this in one form or another. “There is no one who cares about or thinks about your life a fraction of what you do,” one reader began, and, “life is hard, so learn to love yourself now, it’s harder to learn later,” another reader finished.

Many readers included the old cliche: “Don’t sweat the small stuff; and it’s almost all small stuff.” Eldri, 60, wisely said, “When confronted with a perceived problem, ask yourself, ‘Is this going to matter in five years, ten years?’ If not, dwell on it for a few minutes, then let it go.” It seems many readers have focused on the subtle life lesson of simply accepting life as is, warts and all.

How to remove and replace baseboards - Capell Flooring and Interiors

Justin Phipps and Matt Capell with Capell Flooring and Interiors give some quick tips and advice while removing and baseboards to make that process a little more successful for you on your next project.

One quick note - if you have finish nails stuck in your base, it is best to pull the nail all the way through the baseboard rather than go back the way that they originally went in.

How wide do carpet rolls come from the mills? Capell Flooring and Inter...

Hi, Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors here in the Boise, Idaho area. Hey, so we had a question come up last month, and I thought I'd address it in another FAQ. So the question was, how wide does carpet come when you purchase it? And so if you look here, I wrote how wide does carpet come? So I would say with carpet, the standard roll size is 12 feet wide. And so I would say, I'm guessing just from my experience of doing this my whole life, I would say probably close to 98% of carpet made in the USA comes in 12 foot wide.
You can get carpet 12 foot wide by any length, up to a certain point, because if it was 300 feet long, sometimes that works, but it can get really heavy. And so usually a standard carpet roll is 12 feet by anywhere from 150 to 200 feet long. Okay. So that's a standard roll. Now carpet, sometimes you can get it in either a 13x2 width, sometimes a 13x6, and sometimes a 15 foot by your length. Now, most of the styles that come in width like this, usually are foreign and made like in Turkey or other areas. If you have a 15 footer, usually some styles that are like plushes or berbers that are harder to seam, sometimes you can get those carpets in 15 foot, but it's really rare.
But there is a few styles that we have here that you can get like that. But you're very limited on selection, because 15 foot rolls are, one, they're going to get really heavy and then they're harder to transport. And so it's just something to be aware of and because of the nature of it being standard 12 foot. So if you have a room that's like, Oh, I don't know. Let's say 16x20, you are going to have to put a seam in that room. There's no way around it. They're not going to custom wide the width for you because that would make the manufacturing process a tedious, slow. And it would up the cost significantly if they were just making little pieces.
So like in the case of this room here, just to combine thoughts, basically with carpet math, you'd need a 12x20, and then you're left over there as a 4x20. So there's a couple of ways around that, but basically what you do you'd need seems to do that. And so that's one thing we discuss with you is how many seams and what you want. If you did 4x20, if you were to draw this out in a room, basically you'd have your 12 foot piece here. And then you just have to decide how many seams you want in it. But with most carpets that are like long and have movement to them, it's not a big deal. These are called T-seams.
And with a carpet installer who knows what he's doing, that's not a big deal. So then you would just take this amount here, and divide by three or divide by two, depending on how many seams you want. Add that to your total and then you'd know how much carpet to order. So, but yeah, it's just kind of interesting. So this question came up, so we wanted to put it on our FAQ page. Most, if not, I don't want to say all, but most like a high, high percentage come in 12 foot width. But that's something we can definitely talk to you when we do one of our design audits or things like that.
If you have more questions on layout, we can tell you exactly where the seams are going and why. And if you want more of them or less of them, just depends if you want to buy more carpet or not, and have a higher waste factor. So, but yeah, you can get these widths, but it's really rare, and you cannot custom do your width. It's just one of those things with the manufacturing process. So hope this helps. If you have any questions about it, please comment below, and I'll definitely answer them for you. And appreciate you taking time to watch this and have a wonderful day.

Advice to Your Younger Self | E-Neighborhood Advisor

When author Mark Manson turned 30, he asked readers age 37 and over what advice they would give to their 30-year-old selves. He received more than 600 responses and the same pieces of advice came up over and over again. Here are 3 of the most common replies.

Start Saving for Retirement Now, Not Later.

The most common piece of advice — so common that almost every single email said at least something about it — was to start getting your financial house in order and to start saving for retirement… today.

There were a few categories this advice fell into:

• Make it your top priority to pay down all of your debt as soon as possible.
• Keep an “emergency fund” — there were tons of horror stories about people getting financially ruined by health issues, lawsuits, divorces, bad business deals, etc.
• Stash away a portion of every paycheck, preferably into a 401k, an IRA or at the least, a savings account.
• Don’t spend frivolously. Don’t buy a home unless you can afford to get a good mortgage with good rates.
• Don’t invest in anything you don’t understand. Don’t trust stockbrokers.

Start Taking Care of Your Health Now, Not Later

We all know to take care of our health. We all know to eat better and sleep better and exercise more and blah, blah, blah. But just as with the retirement savings, the response from the older readers was loud and unanimous: get healthy and stay healthy now.

Don’t Spend Time with People Who Don’t Treat You Well

After calls to take care of your health and your finances, the most common piece of advice from people looking back at their 30-year-old selves was an interesting one: they would go back and enforce stronger boundaries in their lives and dedicate their time to better people.

People typically struggle with boundaries because they find it difficult to hurt someone else’s feelings, or they get caught up in the desire to change the other person or teach the other person to treat them the way they want to be treated. This never works. And in fact, it often makes it worse. As one reader wisely said, “Selfishness and self-interest are two different things. Sometimes you have to be cruel to be kind.”

Here is an example of why you should NOT buy flooring/color from a Monit...

Hi, Matt Capell of Capell Flooring and Interiors. Hey, so I got a quick tip for you. So with flooring, sometimes people try to shop online and purchase online or from a monitor, from a computer or from a phone or a tablet or something, so that can be problematic. So here I got some commercial samples here.

Here's the actual physical sample, and it was an older style, and so the Carpet Mill sent me a picture or a photocopy, and if you look here, this kind of simulates what happens when you buy from off a monitor. The monitor and the pixilation and different things in the settings can make it look way different than what it really is so if you look really closely, you can tell that these are supposed to be the same, but at the end of the day, when I got this paper copy of the actual thing, it does look way different.

This darker color looks a little bit more charcoal, and this one, it looks a little bit greener. And I saved these because I thought that this showed a great example of why it's really hard to buy flooring from a monitor. It's always best to get the sample from the store.

Here's another example they sent as well. If you look here, basically, this kind of lighter color's way more dominant in the paper version than on here. And so my suggestion would be, is to make sure to go to the store itself. You know, if you're here in the Boise area, come see us. And if not, yeah, you'll avoid a lot of headaches if you try to avoid buying from a computer monitor versus in person. Thanks.

Inventors who came to regret their inventions | E-Neighborhood Advisor

Not all inventors are happy with their inventions. Ranging from the seemingly obvious atomic bomb to the font Comic Sans, inventors may not be happy with their end result. Check out this short list from Mental Floss writer Kenny Hemphill.

Ethan Zuckerman — The Pop-Up Ad

If you've ever found yourself yelling at your computer screen in frustration as yet another pop-up ad leaps into view, obscuring the content behind it, Zuckerman is the person to blame.

Now head of the Center for Civic Media at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Zuckerman wrote an essay for The Atlantic in 2014 entitled "The Internet’s Original Sin," in which he took full responsibility for the pesky ads. Working as an employee of web host Tripod at the time, Zuckerman explained that the company, which provided free web pages for consumers, had spent five years looking for a way to generate revenue.

"At the end of the day, the business model that got us funded was advertising. The model that got us acquired was analyzing users’ personal homepages so we could better target ads to them. Along the way, we ended up creating one of the most hated tools in the advertiser’s toolkit: the pop-up ad."

Bob Propst — The Office Cubicle

While working as a consultant for Herman Miller in the 1960s, Bob Propst introduced America to the open plan office and with it, the office cubicle. It was, he told the New York Times in 1997, designed to "give knowledge workers a more flexible, fluid environment than the rat-maze boxes of offices."

Companies saw his invention as a way to save money, doing away with individual offices and replacing them with open plans and cubicles. Propst came to lament his invention. "The cubiclizing of people in modern corporations is monolithic insanity," he said.

Vincent Connare — Comic Sans

"If you love it, you don't know much about typography." Those are the words of its designer, Vincent Connare, talking to the Wall Street Journal. Connare followed up that comment, however, with this: "If you hate it, you really don't know much about typography, either, and you should get another hobby."

Connare's view, and one shared by lots of others, is that the problem with Comic Sans is not with the font itself, but its overuse and misuse. Designed for a Microsoft application aimed at children to be used as a replacement in speech bubbles for Times New Roman, Connare never imagined it would become so widely used and derided.

3 Things that are certain in Life - All Floors Can Scratch - Capell Fl...

Hi, Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors. Hey, I just had a fun, quick tip video for you today. This is kind of a joke that we have, but it's something that we do need to discuss.

Three things that are certain in life.

One, if you live in the United States, the first one is taxes. The second one is, we're all going to die. And here's the third one that's flooring related, all flooring scratches.

The reason I bring this up is we'll have people that have been to other stores before and they'll say, "I want the flooring that will not scratch." And unfortunately, doesn't matter if it's tile, doesn't matter if it's luxury vinyl, laminate, hardwood, it all scratches. It's just part of the nature of things. And so one thing that we tell people is that if by chance a floor did not scratch, then you wouldn't be able to cut it. And if you wouldn't be able to cut it, then you wouldn't be able to install it. Now, that being said, there are certain floors that are more scratch-resistant than other floors and we sell lots of those floors. But as far as getting a scratch-proof floor, it just, they don't exist.
Anyway, hopefully, it's been a little bit of humor in this, but on the same token, everything will scratch so it's important to put felt pads and things of that nature under your floor. Even tile can scratch if you have something that's sharp enough or hard enough, like a rock in your shoe. And so it's just important with all types of flooring, especially with hardwood, to be careful not to scratch it. Anyway, yes, so I'm trying to debunk the myth that there is a scratch-proof floor.
Anyway, hope you're having a wonderful day. We'd love to sell you a lot of scratch-resistant flooring. But anyway, hope you're doing good. Thanks for taking the time to watch this video. If you have any questions, please shoot it down below and I'll try my best to answer those for you. Thanks.

The Design Audit at Capell Flooring and Interiors

Hi, my name's Matt Capell with Capell Flooring and Interiors here in the Boise, Idaho area.

Hey, if you do a little bit of research on our business, you'll come across the term, the Design Audit……and so basically what the Design Audit is, is we take, we ask you a series of questions and we take your particular house, your lifestyle, how you live, whether you're married, you have 10 kids and different things. Your needs for flooring will be different than, say, if there are fewer people in the home or different things. So we take all these selections, all these possibilities, we ask you a series of questions so we can narrow it down to find the perfect type of flooring for your home, your situation, and your lifestyle.

And so it's a great process. And we would ask that if you're interested in that, please come see us. It's a trademark process, and we'd love to help you with it. I'll put a link below, but it's basically if you come to capellflooring.com, there will be a link for Design Audit. You can sign up to do one of those with us, or you can just drop in. That's part of the process. But it just takes the complicated process of flooring and it makes it easier for you. And we get to know what you need and what you want, and then we're able to make recommendations based on what works best for you and your home. So thanks for taking the time to watch this video. And if you have any questions, please let me know below, and thanks for watching.

You’re sitting wrong and your back knows it | E-Neighborhood Advisor

Esther Gokhale is a posture expert. She recently gave a Ted Talk about the importance of good posture, which has become even more significant as more and more people have been working from home. Most of us didn’t have a home office space ready and waiting when we began to shelter in place, so if you’ve spent the past several months shifting around on a borrowed dining room chair with a cushion wedged behind you, you’re not alone. Here are some of her recommendations.

 “Sit up straight, shoulders back.”

This advice, says Gokhale, sets us up in the wrong position. “What we end up doing is arching our backs by tensing up our muscles — the ropey ones that the massage therapist will tell you are tight… What that does is it loads the discs [in the lower back] and jams the edges of the vertebrae against each other.”

When we keep trying to sit up straight, we can ultimately alter our anatomy, she explains. “If that becomes a habit — which it does for many people — then those tight, short muscles inhibit the blood supply in the area so now you have an anemic back and repair isn’t happening efficiently.”

This effort also takes an enormous amount of energy and it doesn’t actually last; we’re likely to slump again after a few minutes when we get tired.

Periodically stopping work to stretch your muscles for a few minutes may bring relief but…

“…a much smarter way is to use the time that you’re sitting to stretch yourself against the backrest,” explains Gokhale. She has created a technique called “stretch sitting” to help perfect this motion. The key? Don’t tuck in your tailbone and use your muscles more.

Standing desks can be good, but it’s still about how you hold your body. When you stand, Gokhale recommends adopting a stance of “readiness”, maintaining a little bit of spring in your knees. But she explains that the average person stands in a way that damages the ligaments and discs.”

When you’re relaxing on the sofa, it’s important to think about your back. We don’t stop damaging — or taking care of — our backs when our working day ends; everything we do has an impact on our bodies. So we should consider stretch sitting while we’re on the sofa too, suggests Gokhale.

You can watch Gokhale’s Ted Talk here: https://youtu.be/k1luKAS_Xcg

Happy sitting!

P.S. Here's a joke for you!

I think the world would be a better place if everyone stopped worrying about good posture... It's just a hunch.

How to fix or minimize scratches and their appearance in Engineered Hard...

Hi, I'm Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors here in Meridian, Idaho. Hey, I've got a quick video for you today. A tip. So what I have here with me today is I have some engineered hardwood and so engineered hardwood just for a quick recap, it basically has a veneer on top, and then below that, it's usually some plywood or pressboard or something else. So the top itself is wood, but the rest of it is not.
But one thing that we get asked about is, how do you deal with scratches or problems on the floor? And so if you have a dark for like this and you get some scratches or things like that in it, it's actually really quite easy to minimize or make those go away because as you can see has, these are called chatter marks or cross-checking, and they can tend to be black.
And in this particular wood, it tends to have kind of a black grain. So really the way to fix that is you just take some markers, you can use Crayola markers or Sharpies or different things. So in this case here, I've got a black and a brown one. So we're going to experiment with both. But basically, if I take this marker and I color that in like that...
And so I'm just going to color on these for a minute. Now mind you, this isn't a perfect fix, but with hardwood really you should be gauging your hardwood on whether or not you can see things if you're standing up and looking down. Any hardwood will have imperfection or problems with it, if you're combing the floor like a bloodhound, so stand up while assessing your floors.
So the National Hardwood Flooring Association tells you to look at your floor as if you're standing up. And so this isn't too much different. So in this case, I did that. So you can put a little moisture on your finger, whatever, but basically, you just rub those in. So it's not exactly a perfect fix and that's why sometimes you see how I'm rubbing that out there. So you get some of the residue off.
If you need to, you can dab your finger in some water or if you're up to it, you can lick your fingers a little bit, but see how I'm rubbing it a little bit, creating a little bit of friction on it, and then you just rub it in like that.
If you look really closely, you can see it a little bit, but basically, if you're standing up, it goes away for the most part, and that just looks like another, as you see up here, like another chatter mark or crosschecking. And if at first, it doesn't look so great, you can always try again and try a different color, but you can usually use like Crayola markers, those work really well, these black ones.
You can see in the past, I had already fixed something here with a black one, along here, and you just rub it in like that. So basically at the end of the day, I mean, I had a bunch of white and marks here, and this works especially well with darker colors. If you're standing up and looking down this floor, you're not going to see them anymore.
So I know it sounds kind of silly, but just using markers from like Sharpie or Crayola or whatever will... And make sure it's like the color of your floor. So, if your floor is red or orange or whatever, you'd need a different color, but that's just an easy way to fix and minimize problems and make scratches go away in engineered floors.
So hope this tip helps you. If you have any questions, let me know. Feel free to share this with others or like it, or ask questions. And I try to respond to everything. Thanks so much.

How to sound like you are from Boise? Capell Flooring and Interiors

Hi, Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors. We thought this might be just a fun video. I actually was born and raised in the Treasure Valley. I was born in Boise downtown and grew up in Meridian for most of my life. But that being said, I noticed when people move here, sometimes they ask me how to pronounce things or how to sound like a local because they're worried.

Just for the record, I love you guys. I love that you move here. It's a great place to live. But we just thought this would be kind of cute and fun to do. If you want to blend in and sound like a local in the area, the first one that's a dead giveaway is how you pronounce the capital. A lot of people say Boise, especially in the national media and things. If you just say boy and then see, you'll sound like a local. That's how everybody that's from here says it.

The other one that's kind of funny is this town that's just south of Meridian. It's pronounced Q-NA, Kuna. If you hear somebody say Kuna, they're not from here. Just make sure you say Kuna and you'll sound like you're local, okay? The other thing that's kind of funny that you hear this on GPS is, a big road that goes through town is Ustick and you hear it more on GPSs and things, but they'll say like Austick and other funny things. We thought it'd be funny to say, so it's just Ustick.

Now in others ... lots of other little minutia and things like that. But what other ... if you can comment below, what other things do you have questions on how it's pronounced and things like that so you can blend in and look like you've lived here for a long time? In case you're worried about that. Like I said, I'm not worried about it personally, but I just thought it was funny. Whenever somebody says Boise, you know they're not from here.

And one other thing too is if you just remember there's no Z in Boise, that's another little thing. Oh, here's the last one. The name of our business is this. One thing we tell people, it just sounds like maple with a C. Although it's not spelled like that, if you said maple with a C, Capell, Capell Flooring, you'll always say it right. Anyway, we love and appreciate you. We're glad that you're moving here. We'd love to help you with your next remodel. Please give us a call. If you have any other questions on pronunciations, I might make another video. It might be fun. Comment below and I'll get to it. Thanks so much and have a wonderful day.

Welcome to September 2020 | Capell Flooring and Interiors

Dear friends,

I hope your fall is off to a great start! With all the craziness with the C-word and questions about what school will look like this year, it may be a bit difficult for our kids to get too excited. I’m still getting a bit nostalgic as the stores are filled with notebooks, backpacks, and pencils. For me, the start of a new school year was always a chance to make new friends, reconnect with old ones, and learn so many new things.

Luckily, I still get to have those same experiences today. Each new day is an opportunity to meet new customers, reconnect with past ones (sometimes even generations of the same family working with us over the years!), and learn more about flooring and about our customers’ needs. I truly believe that one of the things that sets Capell Flooring apart is our commitment to getting to know our customers and providing them with world-class service.

If you’d like to stay in touch or learn more about finding the right flooring options for your home, we’re always happy to answer questions when you stop by the store. You can also connect with us on Facebook, where we share fun articles and things you never knew about flooring.

Your friend,

 Matt Capell
