Getting the most from your kitchen appliances

The kitchen is one area where we spend our hard-earned money on appliances big and small, expecting them to protect our food, save our time, and clean our dishes. And while there’s a lot these machines can do for us, there is also some maintenance we need to do to ensure they last long, productive lives.

The Coffee Maker 

If you regularly use a drip coffee maker, it is important to clean it once a month in order to prevent buildup that will slow the performance and flow of the machine. The Dishwasher 

The dishwasher helps us avoid standing at the sink washing one dish at a time. But the last thing we want to see after the wash cycle ends is a dish that’s been left dirty.  

Proper dish loading helps prevent that. For example, to allow water and soap to get easy access to the dirtiest part of the silverware, they should be loaded with the eating ends of the utensils facing upward. The Refrigerator 

New refrigerators can do a lot. In fact, some can even sync your shopping list to your smartphone! One overlooked feature that you may not be using efficiently is the humidity setting on crisper drawers. As produce ages, it loses moisture. Lighting can affect mood, sleep quality

Finding the right light source to match your decor can be tricky. After all, the lighting in a home is powerful. It's more than the look of a lamp or light fixture. The source light can affect your mood, energy, sleep quality. It can even impact how good the floors and tiles look in your home!

Before choosing lamps or fixtures for a room, consider the lighting needs. Will you need overall ambient lighting, task lighting, accent lighting, or a combination?

The second big decision about lighting is the type of light bulbs you want to use.

Halogen bulbs emit white light and are the closest to natural daylight. However, the color of objects under this kind of light is sharper. Halogen lights work well under cabinets and in pendant or pocket lights.

Fluorescent lighting is blueish and harsh, and tends to work best in areas like garages, basements, and attics.

However, compact fluorescent bulbs are not like standard fluorescent lighting. These bulbs can be used in place of incandescent bulbs and last 10x longer. Be aware that they contain trace amounts of mercury and should be recycled rather than thrown in the trash.

Incandescent bulbs have traditionally been the most common type. These warm, inviting lights compliment skin tones; however, they are not particularly energy efficient and are being phased out in many areas.

We Fix $39 Flooring Installs

You have all seen those ads from Big Box Stores, and we get asked about it all the time at Capell Flooring and Interiors here in Meridian, Idaho.  The ad has a familiar tune of $39 installation for the whole house  or Free Pad.  In fact, we have a couple of these stores just down the street from us, so we hear it a lot.  This marketing strategy can be summed up in a few different ways, but let’s tackle this question today to try to shed some light on the subject.

I think we have all heard at one point or another, “­­You get what you pay for?”  All one has to do is google “Big Box Store Flooring complaints,” and there is a truck load of information that comes out that doesn’t exactly make you feel warm and fuzzy about moving forward.   As the owner of Capell Flooring and Interiors, we are up front with people and no professional installer works for that rate.  Let me point out some keys to consider when trying to make your flooring decision.

The ads say “basic installation” which really is only part of the installation process.  The Carpet will need to be torn out, tack strip will need to be put in or replaced and  there are other parts of the install such as: stairs, trap doors, and other parts as well that may arise.  Apparently those are not part of the “basic installation,” and not part of this deal.  All of these other installation parts that are not part of the basic installation but are necessary to do the job are marked up to a crazy rate to offset the “basic installation” rate.  They also mark up the cost of carpet or pad more than normal to cover the cost of their “basic” offer.  It is kind of a classic bait and switch technique.

Installation is a major key to every job or perhaps even the key.  You can have the nicest carpet, tile, or hardwood but if it isn’t installed correctly it will just look plain awful.  You want to go with a store that stands behind their work, and who uses professional and experienced installers.  Capell Flooring and Interiors is different and exceptional.  We stand behind our work, and do a wonderful job.  We will fix your $39 install, but better yet have Capell Flooring and Interiors do it right the first time!
