It seems like I’m seeing more and more adds saying, “$99 labor, $39 labor, or FREE labor” from big box stores??  The unfortunate part about each and every one of these ads is that it tends to devalue the importance of the labor when installing flooring.  It gives the impression that it is kind of an afterthought or not super critical in the process of flooring.   Actually, at the end of the day, stores that use this type of advertising usually just pad the cost of labor in the materials.   It really isn’t free.  The other issue is that the actual labor will make or break your new flooring……

You can purchase the nicest, most expensive tile, hardwood, carpet, etc., and if it isn’t installed properly then your new flooring just will not look good.  When buying furniture or electronics they are assembled at a factory, and you just put them into your house directly from the store.  Flooring needs to be manufactured and installed in your home.  It is crucial to have trained and experienced installers doing this for you.

Also, most stores offer a 1-year warranty on labor which is nice, but a lot of problems can occur long after that.  We offer a lifetime installation warranty, so for example if your carpet wrinkles 5 years after the purchase from Capell Flooring and Interiors, we will come in and re-stretch it for free as part of our warranty.

Where to find power to improve your day


Zig Ziglar once said, “The greatest source of happiness is the ability to be grateful at all times.”

During the whirlwind of day-to-day demands and pressures, finding points of gratefulness can alleviate a lot of stress, sadness and lower emotional moments. Fortunately, there are so many ways to express this emotion! Indeed, it has been said that gratitude opens the door to the fullness of life.

Whether in good or bad times, gratitude is genuine appreciation. It has the power to impact our mental and emotional state. And, when we express gratitude toward other people, they also feel that positive influence. That’s double gold!

Too often people forget (or don’t want) to express gratitude – even to say thank you. Yet, by giving thanks, you may unwittingly brighten the day of someone who is going through a rough time.

A habit of gratitude – living with a grateful attitude – impacts how we view our life and the world around us. Often things don't seem as hard or harsh. Deliberately seeking things to be grateful for may cause us to be more aware of the good that surrounds us, even during not-so-good moments. Best of all, gratitude is like a muscle: it can be strengthened with deliberate practice.


Just before turning in for a restful night’s sleep, try to review the events of your day. Did someone help you solve a problem, make you feel good, even make you smile? Did you learn something valuable from a not-so-good situation? No matter how big or small, write the details down.

Something else to make a note of during this exercise ... Were you thankful, or helpful, and did you smile at someone? Every day is speckled with moments of good, even the bad times.

This will probably be difficult at first, but being diligent about this exercise will begin to train your brain to watch for positive instances throughout the day. In doing this, you will begin to see more and more positive, uplifting things around you.

Keeping track of these moments helps us see life in a better way.

Warning: A daily gratitude workout will have side effects. You’re bound to smile more, feel even better than you do now, and believe in a brighter future.

Now those are excellent side effects!

How Celtic traditions lead to Halloween costumes today


It's almost time for some strange looking adults and children to venture out into the world! Some of the uniquely costumed smaller ones may even knock on your door. Halloween costume creations are often limited only by imagination. After all, inspiration is everywhere!

So, why do people dress up for Halloween?

During the first ten years, B.C., October 31st was the last day of the Celtic calendar. That was their annual Samhain ("summer's end") festival to celebrate the end of the harvest season and winter's start on November 1st. It was also a time to honor the dead.

The Celtics believed souls were freed to roam the earth at the end of their calendar year. During the festival, they wore masks to disguise themselves from spirits with evil intentions. Some believed that if they looked dead, the spirits would consider them one of dead and leave them alone.

As Romans took over the lands, Feralia, a Roman holiday to remember and commemorate their dead, blended with the Celtic Samhain festival.

Many Halloween customs and traditions arrived in North America along with immigrants in the 1800s, and since then the holiday has evolved to include new traditions like pumpkin carving.
Today Halloween is more about having fun than honoring past lives. From young to old, people dress up in whimsical, scary, and iconic costumes and gather to have a good time with friends.

I would like the hardwood floor that does not scratch……

From time to time at my store, Capell Flooring and Interiors, we get asked for the hardwood flooring that does not scratch.  The first time I heard this I had to smile just a little bit.  I thought that would be a good topic to tackle briefly today in today’s blog.  This confusion can be traced back to misleading advertising from some box stores in past years where many times the fine print didn’t even match the warranty they were advertising. 
   
There are definitely hardwoods that are less likely to scratch because they are just harder hardwoods.  (See my previous Janka scale post for more info there) There are also better hardwood finishes which are stronger and provide better protection than others which again helps.  Although both of these are helpful, they definitely don’t make anything scratch proof.

Here is something to think about:  Even stainless steel, which is extremely hard and a lot harder than hardwood, will scratch. (See hardwood gallery here) Take a quick peek at your kitchen sink and you will see what I mean J  Those that know me well, know I like to keep things light hearted at times.  That being said, the only floor that I think is completely “scratch proof” is the more traditional dirt floor of years past.  You can sweep out scratches in the dirt floor, and they will go away, but I think I would rather stick with hardwood floors and run the risk of getting scratches in them.

Dealing with lower back pain


Lower back pain can be the result of many factors: aging, overexertion, stress, strain, degenerative diseases, injury, or poor posture. Before a physician can decide on treatment, he or she will perform preliminary tests to narrow down the cause of the pain. 


Treatment and Techniques

• Epidural steroid injections – Injections can help relieve neck and back pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves.

Sometimes when selecting carpet, it can be a little hard to pick out a color.  There tends to be anywhere between 10 to 50 colors on a given deck board.  The other thing that I have learned over the years is that the eye is an amazing thing.  Let me explain what I mean by that.  We may think that we are just looking at one color at a time but in all reality, while we are looking at that color, our eyes are processing all the other colors around that particular color………so, how do you solve that?

It is easy, grab some white copy paper.  Cover up all the other colors with the white paper and just leave one color at a time showing.  It makes it a ton easier to pick a color once you have decided on a particular carpet style.  I learned that trick over 10 years ago.  Your eyes will thank you, and it will make it a lot easier to zero in on the right color that will work for your home.

The right questions to ask to get the best service provider



It won't be long before we prepare our homes for Thanksgiving and holiday gatherings. That means many of us will have a home filled with guests.

Everyone loves a clean and well-maintained home, especially when company is coming. With busy schedules and little spare time, it can often make sense for someone else to take care of the cleaning. That's why it's no surprise that the number of home cleaning services available across the country has increased over the last several years.

There are professional companies who do weekly cleanings, or occasional deep cleaning. There are also companies who will come into your home and put up holiday lights and decorations. A quick search on Google often helps identify who is available.

Choosing the right service provider can be tricky. To start, make a list of services you want to get done. Ask friends and family for recommendations, read online reviews, and compare your wish list to services available from four or five service providers.

As a potential client, you need to ask the right questions to know as much as possible about the company you choose to hire. Here is a good list of questions to ask for any service you need:

1. Are you licensed? – If it is a profession that has one, you want a company with a legitimate license.

2. Are you insured? – You want to be certain you are protected from workplace mishaps, petty theft, and damages. Check with your homeowner's insurance provider about your coverages and the coverage they recommend a service provider has.

3. Do you use in-house employees or subcontractors? – Be sure about who is coming into your home. Some companies sub-contract work out to other businesses and have varying levels of control over who will actually do the job. If a company uses subcontractors, it doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get bad service, but you’ll want to know about the sub’s qualifications, insurance, etc. as well.

4. Will you offer an quote? – You do not want a 'ball park' estimate. Be as detailed as possible about the services you are requesting, then ask for a written quote that includes details of your project and contingencies for any ‘surprises’.

5. What is your business address? – If you have to file a complaint or need something else, you should know where they are located.

6. What's your pricing strategy? – Some may charge a fixed price for everything, which isn't a bad deal, but ideally, the company will send their estimators to check your home for the final quote.

7. What's the extent of your customer support? – Make sure that the company is responsive and doesn’t take more than a day to get back to you. That can include communication by phone, mail, email, or text.

8. Do you have a service guarantee? – Know how the company will handle things if you are unhappy with their service and results.

9. Can you change the schedule without penalty? – If, for example, you need to change a cleaning appointment, you will want to know how the company handles such requests and whether you’ll be charged an additional fee.

Taking the time to do your research, look at reviews, get input from others, and get everything in writing (with signed contracts before the work begins) will help ensure a positive experience and outcome whenever you hire a service provider.

Flooring and How it Relates to Airplanes……

A favorite person of mine likes to relate all aspects of his life to airplanes.  He does this because in his younger years he was a pilot.  I can relate to this in my own little way because I tend to relate things to things I like too, whether that is my family experiences, sports, or yes even flooring.  I grew up in the Boise area and I am going to have different experiences than somebody from South Africa.  I thought it might be fun to relate flooring to planes and airplane flights for a moment. Buckle your seat belt and come along for the ride for a quick minute or two….

When a pilot and airplane gets ready to take off, we learn of different things that can happen during a flight.  A lot of them are pretty serious in the event of a crash or something really going wrong with the plane.  This is more of a warning and preparation for a possible emergency.    One thing the pilot cannot promise, which is a bit out of his control, is whether or not the flight will hit some turbulence.  This is similar in flooring and in construction in general.  Try as we might, sometimes your flooring project might hit a little turbulence during the construction process.  Nobody likes it, but we can get through it.

A common type of flooring turbulence is freight being a little off schedule among a few other things.  Try as we might, sometimes freight just shows up a day later or sometimes much longer than we were told.  At Capell Flooring, we do everything in our power to be as accurate with scheduling as possible, but sometimes the unexpected comes up with freight lines or other things that are just out of our control.  We have a turbulence letter and our “ducks in a row” checklist that we send out to our clients to make sure we avoid as many, if not all, bumps along the way.
