What exactly is Laminate Wood and is it a good flooring option?

Laminate flooring has always been a popular choice for homeowners on a budget. But any homeowner can enjoy this beautiful floor covering and its convenient installation. Capell Flooring and Interiors provides high quality laminate floors to residents in Meridian, Idaho, at great prices. We offer a large variety of floor designs, ranging from light to dark and everything in between! It is easy to create an interior design that you and you family can enjoy every day. Choosing quality products ensures that you have the best experience at home. This low maintenance and affordable option can be shipped fast to you.

Laminate flooring offers many of the same benefits as hardwood does. For example, it is a hard surface floor covering. This means that it won’t absorb odors and dirt like carpet tends to. This can make cleaning a lot easier when it comes to day to day maintenance. Stains are resisted by the durable, laminated surface of the floor. It is also more resistant to moisture that might collect in bathrooms and kitchens. The top layer of laminate planks is durable enough to stand up to scratching and buffing from high foot traffic as well.  (It can scratch though, so you need to still be careful.) This is a floor that can handle everyday use.

Another great benefit of laminate flooring is that it is easy to install. Installation for hardwood typically takes a while because there are many steps involved. For example, hardwood needs to be left in the room it is installed in for up to 48-72 hours to adjust to the moisture of the air and to acclimate. This prevents swelling and lifting that can occur after it is placed. Laminate wood does not normally need to adjust and can be installed right away. The tongue and groove system is often used on laminate planks for convenience. This glue less method makes installation easy by allowing homeowners or installers to simply click the planks together. The planks are also shorter than hardwood planks which makes laminate easier to transport and to fit in tight corners.

The most obvious benefit of this floor covering is its economical price. Hardwood can cost thousands of dollars even after it is installed due to the need for occasional sanding and refinishing. Damages, which are more common in busy homes, can lead to expensive replacement. Laminate wood flooring has a higher resistance to scratches and water damage, so replacements are few and far in between. The planks can be un-clicked and lifted in the event of a damaged spot, making the replacement possible. This is the perfect option for a homeowner who wants convenience and great design at a fraction of the price!

Getting the beautiful look of hardwood doesn't need to cost more than necessary, and laminate wood is a great option. Enjoy the added benefit and fine design of quality laminate flooring from Capell Flooring and Interiors. Call us to get a measure and quote today. Tips to prepare for a home renovation project

Whenever there is a renovation project happening, you want it to go quickly, without issues or surprises. There are a couple of things you can do to make that happen:

Research
Doing your research will help you gain a clear understanding about what will happen during the project. That doesn't mean you have to have expert-level knowledge, but you should be clear about the steps involved and how long each will take. Discover what potential issues may arise. After all, it's not always possible to know what will get discovered behind walls and under old floors.

Plan
It's not always necessary, but during some renovation projects residents many need to sleep somewhere else for a night or more. Know when that might happen and plan your options for getting out of the house for a night or two. The same holds true when changes affect water availability or the use of a kitchen for cooking. If there are pets, they too may need to have another place to stay for a little while.

Communicate
Keep communication lines open with the team renovating your home. Everyone involved in the project needs to be on the same page about what must get done and when, so there are no surprises or delays (or at least to minimize them!).

Protect
Renovation projects typically involve a lot of activity and people. Know who will be entering your home always. Be sure that all unnecessary clutter and household objects get cleared out of the way. Cover the walls and floors in high traffic areas with protective barriers in a way that will not damage finishes. For areas where nobody will go, consider hanging plastic drapes over entryways to keep dust out.

Here are more tips and projects to consider at different times of the year.

When is it time to refinish my hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors, if properly maintained, should last a very long time. The best way to keep your hardwood looking great is to make sure that your finish is still working. The best way to test your finish is to go to your floor’s highest traffic area and pour a small amount of water, such as a tablespoon or two, onto the wood.

Please look for one of the three possible results from this experiment:

Does the water bead up, and can you wipe it up without a sign of the water being there?  If this is the case your hardwood floor's finish is doing great still.

Does the water absorb into the wood after a short amount of time, making the floor appear somewhat darker?  If this is the case, your hardwood floor is to some extent worn.  It isn't necessary to refinish right away, but it is something to consider in the near future.

Does the water disappear right away, leaving a black spot in the wood?  If this is the case then your finish is worn out and it is definitely time to have it refinished.  Please get with Capell Flooring and Interiors right away, so we can fix this for you.

Don’t get rid of that old dresser just yet...

Seeing what some people do with their imagination can be fascinating, especially when imagination is used to solve a problem. Imagination is especially awesome when it is used to give new life and purpose to furniture rather than sending it to the landfill.

Old dressers are a great example. They have been repurposed into benches, vanities, pet stations, kitchen islands, and children’s kitchen centers. Some drawers have found new life as foot stools, under-the-bed storage bins with wheels, and wall storage or display centers.

Excellent examples of re-purposed furniture are all over the Internet. There are even websites and social media accounts dedicated to giving old things new life. Here are just a few examples:

• For Creative Juice shared a blog post called “Awesome DIY Furniture Makeover Ideas: Genius Ways To Repurpose Old Furniture With Lots Of Tutorials

Re-Scape is a Facebook page full of inspiration, and the pages liked on their page have great ideas too.

IKEA Hackers focuses less on re-purposing older furniture, and more on innovative ways to use and customize IKEA furniture.

For more inspiration, search Google for the specific article of furniture you’d like to transform (i.e., dresser or furniture) and then click on the Images tab to see what people have done to upgrade their items.

For video how-to’s on these (and practically any subject or hobby) do a search on YouTube.

Will you transform any furniture this summer?

Why We Love Carpet – Capell Flooring and Interiors

For decades, homeowners have been choosing carpet flooring. There is something about that velvet feeling underfoot and comforting warmth that makes a house feel more like a home. This classic floor covering comes in all of the colors of the rainbow and more patterns than you can imagine. Quality carpeting and installation service is affordable when you shop with Capell Flooring and Interiors in Meridian, Idaho. We provide the Boise and the Treasure Valley homes, and local business with the perfect floor coverings with great service.

Carpet is popular for a variety of reasons. Between the great value compared to other flooring and the long-lasting quality, there are so many reasons to choose this material. Homeowners in Boise, Nampa, Meridian, and Eagle will find that this is a good investment for many areas of the home. You can estimate long term use depending on how high the foot traffic in your home is and a few other wear factors. Carpet is generally recommended for rooms that have little or no contact with moisture. Some of the most common spaces for carpet include bedrooms, playrooms and living rooms.

Interior designers will find that carpet is one of the best tools when it comes to creating a beautiful décor. There are hundreds of colors and patterns to match different styles and price points. Texture also plays a key role in the way that carpet can fit a room’s design. Shag has a laid-back look that can work with vintage or modern styles. Wool carpeting is an elegant choice for bedrooms. A frieze pile carpet in a bold color looks great in dens and home offices. The design possibilities are almost infinite. You can even find “green” carpeting for the environmentally conscious homeowner. This kind of carpet is made from recycled materials or natural fibers, like jute grass.

Caring for your new carpet floors is simple. A weekly pass with the vacuum can help keep dirt from being ground too deeply into the fibers. It can also pick up any pollen, dander, or dust that has been trapped in the carpet’s surface to make breathing indoors easier. It is recommended that you clean your carpet at a minimum every 12 to 18 months to get any dirt that has been left behind or sunk too deep into the fibers. This can also be an easy solution for stains or odors that might linger. Some carpets are treated with stain resistant chemicals. These varieties of carpet can help make cleanings easier and extend the life of your floors.

Installation for this floor covering is also simple. Carpet can come in tiles or in 12ft roll goods.  Rolls need to be cut before installation and it is best to look at it as one large sewing project. Carpet tiles can simply be placed like a grid in the room of your choice and are commonly used in commercial applications. A proper high quality pad is recommended to go underneath the carpet flooring for added comfort and protection from scraping and moisture from the subfloors.  A good carpet pad just makes your carpet feel better and is worth the extra investment. The flooring experts at Capell Flooring and Interiors will help you through this process and make the transition to your new carpeting as smooth as possible. You should take the exposure to sunlight and amount of foot traffic into account prior to installation to decide where the best places to use carpet are as well.

Ordering your new carpet flooring is easy with Capell Flooring and Interiors. Visit our showroom in the Meridian, Idaho and surrounding areas. Improve your home today with quality carpet products and installation.

‘Dog’ Days of Summer!

Are you getting excited about the long weekend? It’s a clear sign that winter has passed, spring is almost done, and summer is minutes away. BBQ season is here, and nothing’s better than a good ole hot dog!

There are a couple of steps to grilling the perfect dog. It starts with your favorite franks and the grill. Make sure you’ve got plenty of propane (or charcoal) and that the grill rack is clean.

Once it’s clean and ready for use, turn on the heat. Preheating gas barbecues to a consistent temperature is important. If cooking with charcoal, make sure the flames die down and the briquettes are coated evenly with white ash. Patiently waiting for them to ash over stabilizes the coals and avoids sudden spikes in temperature. For more tips on charcoal temperatures, click here.

When it’s time to grill those hot dogs, keep them moving over medium to medium-low heat. The lower the fat content in the dogs, the lower the cooking temperature. Rolling them evenly over the grate keeps them heating evenly.

The average cooking time is 5 to 7 minutes for regular dogs and 7 to 10 minutes for jumbo franks.

You can serve your hot dogs immediately, or move them to the lowest heat possible to stay warm while you lightly butter and toast the buns on the grill.

Whatever you do, don’t let the hotdogs stay in the warmer too long, because dried out hot dogs are not tasty.

Dress them up with your favorite toppings, like onions, sweet corn or mango relish, Sriracha mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, cheese, bacon, chilli, or anything else you desire.

Now, who’s ready to BBQ?

Our Bodies are Magnificent Machines

Our bodies are well-designed machines. They digest what we consume in the best way possible to keep the mind, skin, and internal organs as healthy as possible. A large portion of how well all of it works is directly connected to what we eat and drink.

Nutrition is the primary contributor to our health. Indeed, conditions like brain fog, diabetes, heart disease, and stroke can be directly connected to food and beverage choices. So often, we make choices based on convenience, flavor and pleasure, often with little thought about what the body needs. Our real needs are based on:

Protein: Needed to build muscles, provide strength to the immune system, build new tissues, repair damaged cells, and help with hormones and enzymes.

Carbohydrates: The primary source of energy. There are two types: simple carbohydrates, which are the quickest source of energy to the body, and complex carbohydrates, which take longer to break down and can therefore sustain energy needs for longer periods of time. Plus, they are often rich in fiber and high in vitamins and minerals.

Fats: Healthy fats contribute to blood pressure regulation, energy, and protection around vital organs. Fats can also protect us from external changes like temperature.

Vitamins: There are water-soluble and fat-soluble vitamins. These help the body grow, develop, and function properly, while regulating body systems. There are 13 essential vitamins - A, C, D, E, K, B vitamins (B6, B12, riboflavin, niacin, thiamine, and pantothenic acid), folate, and biotin – and each performs specific tasks within the body.

Minerals: These regulate body processes and make tissues. Like vitamins, they aid in the proper operation of many systems in the body, including the immune system. Important minerals include Chloride, Calcium, Copper, Chromium, Fluoride, Iron, and Iodine.

Water: This is an essential nutrient, because the human body is 70% water. Good hydration helps dissolve and carry essential vitamins and minerals to where they are needed most. It also regulates body temperature, removes waste, and nourishes the skin.

Superior, well-balanced nutrition with lean proteins along with fruits and vegetables in a kaleidoscope of colors – keeps the body healthy and in the best operating condition for as long as possible.

Here is an outline of the food that will get your body the vitamins and minerals it needs.

Plan Ahead for A Rainy Day……….

I see this happen all the time, and thought it would make for a good talking point today.  Over the years I have noticed that most styles-whether it be tile, carpet, or any type of flooring-that a style usually lasts somewhere between 3 to 7 years.  On products that are sold by the box or carton such as tile, hardwood, and laminate wood etc., it is always best to order an extra box or two or at a bare minimum save the partial box that you have leftover.

Why you might ask?

Pretty simple really, I have had lots of dear clients who want to return the extra box for a refund, and then 4 years later little Johnny will drop something in the bathroom that is large and heavy and he manages to crack a tile.  Mom and Dad call looking to get another box of tile, but at that point what usually happens, is that tile color has been discontinued.  No extra tile was saved, or purchased. If you can find the tile in question, then there usually is a dye-lot issue, (meaning the color will not match).  This leaves the homeowner either having to live with a broken tile or having to replace the whole bathroom floor. Which is not a fun prospect.

You could even say this is like low cost “Flooring Insurance”

Buying that extra box or two is like “Flooring Insurance” in a way.  The upfront cost is minimal and you will be ready to go for a rainy day.  It seems like on a 1-2 per month basis that we find ourselves in this situation and it is always best to just plan ahead.  There is nothing more painful for me than to tell somebody that their floor color has been dropped, when all this could have been avoided if they kept or bought some extra tile.

When making your next flooring purchase, think long term, so you don’t find yourself in this situation. Because floods, spills, and weird accidents happen and you will for sure be happy that you did!!!

Sincerely,

Matt “Let’s plan ahead” Capell
