Making the World a Better Place

We want the world to be a better place and random acts of kindness are one way to help that happen. We are bombarded with negativity on a daily basis. Plus, we all have a bad day from time to time. Sometimes performing random acts of kindness creates the only major bright spot in another person's day.

If you've ever had a bad day, then it's easy to understand how someone doing something nice would make a huge difference. It gives hope to a sense of hopelessness.

Whether paying for the order of the person behind you at the coffee shop drive-thru or sending an unexpected uplifting note in the mail, there are RAKtivists everywhere. These Random Acts of Kindness Activists believe kindness changes the world and are actively inspiring hope and generosity through actions. Are you among them?

There is a website, dedicated to this movement, and there you can find many ideas in categories like Free, Instant, Minimal, Family, School, Work, Animals... There are even resources for K-12 teachers.

Do your floors make war in your home?

Are there areas of your house in the middle of a floor war?  Pesky living room giving you trouble and you can't decide between hardwood or carpet? Deciding what floor covering to choose can be difficult. It's an investment in your home and you want to be sure the result is ideal.

Deciding if you even need new floor covering is the first decision. Next is what to replace. Sometimes a floor war erupts when trying to decide between carpet and hardwood.

Why choose carpet?
  • It's softer and can create an added sound barrier in a room.
  • It can cost less.
  • It can provide a warmer feel to the floor and a cozier feel in a room, which is why some individuals prefer carpet in the bedroom.

Why choose hardwood?
  • Easier to maintain than carpet
  • Can increase the value of a home
  • Lower allergy concerns caused by things like dust, dander, mites, and pollen.

Whether you choose hardwood, carpet, or one of the many other floor covering options, we are here to help. Come in for a Design AuditTM with one of our flooring experts. While you’re here, learn about this month's specials and put an end to those floor wars.

Do you need ideas to get the junk out?

Happy New Year!

Do you have a catch-all place where items land that seem to have no home in your home - the 'junk drawer?'

This drawer can evoke temporary relief as the hiding place for things that don't fit into the visual peace of a room. That same drawer is often a point of dread when trying to find an item later, especially when there's no certainty the sought-after item ever landed in the junk drawer.

Organizers recommend everything in your home have its place, that there should be no need for a catch-all drawer. Yet, if you have the junk-drawer habit, how do you get rid of it?

I'm glad you asked. Here are some ideas.

First, sort it. Get everything out of the drawer and sort items into piles according to the room where they should be. Then, get things like random tools in the tool box, toiletries to the bathroom, paperwork into your filing system - that is a whole other topic.

If this drawer is the home for specific things like pens, paper clips, twist ties ... insert drawer organizing trays or containers and give each type a spot. Then, the next time you open the drawer for a pen there will be no need to dig.

If something has no purpose, place, or plan, consider trashing it or donating it.

Start a new habit. The next time an item needs to be removed from your sight line, rather than throw it in a catch-all drawer, consider where it needs to go and create a new habit of getting it to its proper home in your home.
