The Dustless Hardwood System - What that means is "Less Dust" Actually....

Hi, Matt Capell here. I'm the owner of Capell Flooring and Interiors here in Meridian, Idaho. Hey, I just have another little tip and some information for you. If you like these please comment below and share it with your friends so I know what content and things to make for you, okay?

We often get asked about the Dustless Hardwood Refinishing Service.  That can be a little tricky with English because when you say dustless some people think that there will not be any dust at all and I don't know about you, but, at least with me if I leave my house for a week and we left it clean when we come back there's dust on stuff. I don't know where it comes from. I think there must be dust fairies or something crazy that happens.

That being said, all seriousness aside, back in the day where you used to refinish a hardwood floor there would be so much dust everywhere. It was crazy. You'd have to wipe it off. You could see it everywhere.

Nowadays, the Dustless System, which I like to refer to as less dust system, 'cause there's not as much. Basically, what that does is, it has an attachment on the sander and it basically is like kind of a vacuum, keeps all the dust in, makes it way less messy, but, to say that there's not gonna be any dust after the job's done, that's just not possible because dust is everywhere.

I just wanted you to have that slight nuance just so when you're having your hardwood refinished either by us or somebody else that you know that it means that there's gonna be a lot less dust, but, it's not going to be perfect.

Hopefully that makes sense. If you have any questions please comment below. I'm more than happy to answer for you and hope you have a great day. Love to have you come see us here at Capell Flooring and I'll talk to you soon.  Thanks!

There are advantages and disadvantages all over the floor.

Searching for new floor coverings can be daunting, especially with so many options! After all, you want to fulfill your wish list and suit your budget at the same time.

The most common types of flooring are carpets, hardwood, and tile, and every type has its benefits and drawbacks. What really matters is finding the type of flooring that suits your needs for the room you’re renovating.

For now, let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages carpet:

Advantages

Cost-effective: Compared to other available flooring options, good quality carpet can be over 50% less expensive than hardwood.

Aesthetics: The variety of colors and designs that carpet comes in allows you to match it to the décor in your home easily.

Insulation: Carpeting can add to the insulation of your home. It can also be a sound absorber. Both of those benefits can also be enhanced by a thick carpet pad, or by choosing carpet styles with a denser fiber.

Disadvantages

Maintenance: Carpets require a high level of maintenance to keep them looking clean and fresh. They need consistent vacuuming to keep them lint, hair, dust, and dander free, and they should ideally be deep cleaned at least twice every year.

Damage and Stains: Compared to other available flooring, carpet is more susceptible to damage and stains. For example, in extreme moisture conditions, they are prone to must and mildew, which can be harmful to people.

If you or someone you know are considering new flooring, please come by our store! We can help you choose the right flooring option for each room of your home, and show you options to suit your personal style and budget.

The mysterious Ping Pong Table and the Champion within……

A couple years back, we decided as a Christmas present to Capell Flooring and Interiors that we would buy a ping pong table to have at work upstairs…..little did we know what we were getting into.  Although Ping Pong or table tennis is widely popular in Asia, who knew that it had similar interest in the Treasure Valley?  We sure didn’t, let’s explore.

We have found out a few strange facts since acquiring our table that has been fun and amusing.  First, I was not alone in having a ping pong table growing up.  A lot of people have or had one and it is a sport that gets played a lot by people of all ages, skills, and abilities.  Second, almost everybody is a “Champion,” in ping pong.  They were the champion of their family, cul-de-sac, subdivision, junior high, local church, intramurals in either high school or college, or the dorm champion in college.    Who knew that ping pong of all things produced so many champions?  We sure didn’t.  I think everybody deep down wants to be a champion in something and ping pong is apparently the ticket to that.  J  Lastly, and most important – ping pong is a lot of fun and we have enjoyed playing it with so many people.

If you want to play some ping pong with us sometime, let us know.  We will make time for you to play a game and have a good laugh and some fun.    We are in Meridian, Idaho and we would love to play a game sometime.  Come see us at 1763 W. Marcon Lane Suite 100, Meridian, ID 83642!

Sliced bread, the printing press, or the computer?

People say the craziest things, and sometimes those quirky sayings make you think. We often hear, “___ is the best thing since sliced bread!” Have you ever wondered what the best thing was before sliced bread?

Otto Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa, invented the first bread slicing machine, which became available to the world in 1928. It is believed that the phrase “the best thing since sliced bread”evolved out of advertising for the slicer that stated, “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped

So, if you were around since before 1928, you might have said, “It’s the best thing since wrapped bread!” Shakespeare may have said, “It’s the best thing since the printing press!” Cavemen may have exclaimed, “It’s the best thing since the invention of the wheel!”

The saying, “The best thing since sliced bread,” refers to something that significantly changes – and improves – peoples’ lives. When it comes to our modern era, maybe we should be saying “The best thing since the computer!” After all, they have benefited our lives a lot!

What is the best thing to improve your life so far? What do you think will make a difference in the future?

C’est l’amour mes amis – Happy Valentine’s Day from Capell Flooring and Interiors

C’est l’amour mes amis – Happy Valentine’s Day from

Capell Flooring and Interiors

There are several ways to say I love you no matter what language you speak.  In honor of St. Valentine’s Day today, here are some of the more common ways to say I love you in different languages we hear in the Treasure Valley from time to time.

·         French – Je t’aime
·         Spanish – Te amo
·         Portuguese – Eu te amo
·         Italian – Ti amo
·         German – ich liebe dich
·         Basque – Maite Zaitut
·         English – I love you!!!

One of the best books that I have read on this subject is called “The Five Love Languages,” by Gary D. Chapman.  (You can read more about it by clicking here.)  Here is my suggestion today, tell somebody near and dear to you that you love them and try to help them feel your love in the way that they feel loved.  (Check out the book to understand better what I’m talking about) At minimum, a little bit of kindness can go a long way to making the world, your community, and your family a better place.

Sincerely,

Matt Capell

P.S.  Do you speak another language other than English?  What is it?  How do you say I love you?  I would love to hear about it and how to say it.

Why does chocolate have power over you?

It's no secret that chocolate is a comfort food. It is craved by many people, and more by women than men.

Do you feel good after eating chocolate? If you do, there is a reason for that: chocolate has been found to raise serotonin levels in your brain.

So, what is serotonin? It's a chemical produced by nerve cells in our bodies (a neurotransmitter) that carries signals through and between the nerves. It is a chemical that positively affects our mood, and when it's low it can lead to depression. In general, serotonin contributes to our happiness and well-being.

That’s where chocolate gets its power. It's in the elevated serotonin levels that create a relaxed feeling after consuming chocolate. The darker the chocolate, the more it may increase serotonin levels. And aside from the feel-good boost of indulging in your chocolate cravings, higher serotonin can actually help reduce anxiety. Plus, dark chocolate contains antioxidants that are good for your body.

So why do women often have a stronger craving for chocolate than men? Serotonin affects women differently, likely due to the rise and fall of hormones during the monthly cycle.

A study in the early 2000s showed that when women ate chocolate, it lowered hypothalamus activity. That regulates the desire for food, which means chocolate likely lowers a woman's hunger.

Many people simply love the creamy flavor of chocolate and how they feel after consuming it. Whatever your reason for indulging, why not snag a square of chocolate today?

A Positive Plug for Polyester Carpet ~ Capell Flooring and Interiors

There was a time in the United States when anybody that was anybody would only purchase wool carpeting.  You just didn’t buy synthetic carpet.  When nylon carpet first came out there was resistance to it, and people didn’t necessarily want to switch from wool.   In the same way that it was difficult for people to switch from wool to nylon in the past, today the same thing seems to happening with nylon and polyester carpeting.

When polyester first came out flooring manufacturers didn’t really know how to make it very well, and in turn it got a bad reputation as “not a good carpet fiber.”  The best analogy that I can come up with is with clothing.  The polyester clothing of the 1960’s and 1970’s wasn’t super great either.  As manufacturers have gotten better at making clothing, I would argue that polyester clothes of today are highly sought after and are desirable now in comparison to yester-year’s polyester clothing.  Polyester carpet is also the same way today, as suppliers have gotten better at making it into carpet it is becoming more sought after. .

Polyester has always been naturally more stain resistant than nylon carpet; especially if the polyester carpet has been solution dyed.  This step makes it so polyester will resist even bleach!  Nylon carpet has what is called “open dye ports,” so if they are left untreated, nylon has an affinity for staining.  That is why almost all nylon carpet is treated with some stain resistant treatment, such as
Scotchguard, Stainmaster, Shaw’s R2X, etc.  Recently, carpet mills have discovered how to make polyester carpet into a continuous filament fiber as well.  Basically what that means, is that the carpet rather than just being in small strands can actually be spun into thread.  As the name suggests, it is essentially one long continuous strand of fiber that is used to make carpet.  Maybe in more simple terms, picture it like one big spool of thread.  Polyester is going to be more stain resistant than nylon if made well, and nylon tends to be more resilient - or wear better.

Over the past decade since the year 2000, we have seen the prices at the pump continue to go up and up.  Gasoline not only has a direct impact on carpet through means of shipping, but nylon carpet is made out of petroleum as well.   As nylon carpet keeps getting more and more expensive, it might be worthwhile to take a look at the new continuous filament, solution dyed polyester carpets.  Change is inevitable in the world, as well as, with flooring.  We see as technology and manufacturing improves each and every year, polyester carpet might need a second look and quite frankly might be like the clothes at the department stores, and what you are really looking for after all in a floor after all.

Laminate wood vs Hardwood which is harder......Capell Flooring

Hi. Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring. Hey, we like to do a lot of different trainings, talk about different things, flooring, Treasure Valley. You name it, we like to talk about it.

Hey, so today, I often get asked, "What's harder, laminate wood or hardwood flooring?"

Here we have a fairly inexpensive laminate wood, and here we have some acacia engineered hardwood, so it has kind of a veneer on top. This is a neat little trick that I figured out years ago, but it just shows something. Come a little closer. Laminate wood is definitely harder, so it works better with dogs, pets, things like that. If you take just a normal pencil and you push it into the laminate like this, really hard, if you look really closely, it does nothing to it. There's no scratch, no nothing, right?

Okay, so then you take this acacia, which is a good hardwood, and you push it in like this, really hard like that. If you look really, really close, it puts a dent or ding in it. Clean that off. See how there's a little bit of a dimple in there? It's just a fun little way to show a little nuance, but with pets, dogs, things like that, long nails, laminate wood's definitely going to do better for scratches than different types of hardwood.

We're going to try one other experiment really quick. Here's another experiment. This is a pretty big can, weighs a pound, 18.6-ounce soup can, right? I'm going to drop it onto the laminate and onto this acacia, and we'll see what happens. Here goes. I'm going to go about waist high. Bounce away. Take a look. That kind of put a ding in it, all right? But not too bad considering. Okay. Let's take a look and see what happens with the acacia. It's kind of interesting. Look, so it put a little bit of a mark there, but looking at it, they both did pretty well considering.

My first recommendation would be to not drop a soup can on either one, but depending on what kind of laminate ... This isn't a high-end laminate by any stretch. It's just a really basic one. The more dense, like if it's a 12-mil laminate or something like that, it'll do a lot better, but generally speaking, when you drop them or things like that, it's definitely going to do better with a laminate wood from scratches and dings.

That concludes our experiment for today. Love to have you come see us here in Meridian. If you have any questions, feel free to give us a shout out, phone call, or email. We'll talk to you soon. Thanks.

Best way to shop for flooring is online? Not so my friend.....Capell Fl...

Hi, Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring and Interiors. Hey I'm here to talk a little bit about something in my Consumers Guide to Flooring book, if you haven't picked it up yet, please look below or to go consumerguidetoflooring.com and pick up a free copy.

So, in this book, I address certain misconceptions about floor covering, and one of them happens to be misconception number six, and what that says is the best way to buy flooring is to shop online. So, I let me read a little bit of this and talk a little bit about it to you, okay? So, I would just say that's probably the worst place to go to buy floor coverings, on the internet, okay, and there's several reasons why.

First one is, you have no idea who the other person is at the other line, I mean, they could delay, they could not ship it on time, there could be issues that way. Other issues you have, you have no idea who you're working with. I mean, the salesperson could be inexperienced, it could be just a kid. Flooring transactions are actually quite complicated, and you could just have lots of issues. The third reason is that they really don't care about developing a long term relationship.

Say they're based out of Nashville Tennessee. Not that that's not, a great place right, but it's not Boise, Idaho, and so, they're not going to care, if there's an issue or something comes up, they don't care, right. If you have a warranty claim, it's an absolute nightmare, because the local representation's not going to be interested in helping you, because they did not get credit for the sale. The other thing too is they have no relationship with local installers, so for example, if you need to have it installed, they're not going to be able to help you with that, and the other thing too is the Internet's not really regulated, and so there could be a fly by night, there's a lot of scams that happen in flooring, where they'll take your credit card and then not even ship it to you, or they're here today and gone tomorrow, right?

They're not a local store like mine, that's been in the Treasure Valley since 1974, where we're interested in helping you not only today but also tomorrow and then 10 years from now. So that's just another misconception, that's what I call misconception number six, and it's best to buy flooring locally. The other thing too about that, that I almost forgot, is that you can't touch or feel it, any of that, and the other thing too is, if it looks to be true on pricing, they usually make it up on freight on the other end. I have negotiated freight rates that make it really inexpensive to ship across the country, whereas if you just do a onesie twosie that ships to a subdivision, they're going to gouge you on freight.

So anyway, thanks for listening. If you like these videos, please comment below, like, share, let me know, and I will create more like this, thanks so much!

Spillguard pad does it work? Great for Pets... Capell Flooring

Matt Capell here. I'm the owner of Capell Flooring, here in Meridian, Idaho. Hey, it's another day to do an experiment. They're fun. So the other day, I was talking pad with a customer, and they wanted to know ... they had pets, right? And they wanted to know what they could do to minimize urine. If it's a cat, sometimes cats have hairballs, and things happen, right? So I was telling him about Spillguard pad right here, and basically what that is, is it has a moisture barrier on top. And the advantage to that is that if urine, or if you spill some drinks, or whatever happens, it keeps the moisture up on top, rather than soak all the way through the pad, and go into the subfloor, and be there. So things like urine, things like that, it can be a life saver when you clean it.

They had asked me, when I was talking to them, they said, "Well, does it really work?" So I was like, "Well, let's try it," so I cut this out, and we pull it out here. And so, I have some water here, and I wanted to show you what happened. We got the Spillguard, it's normal rebond pad on the other side. When you spill the water on it, like that, see how it just kinda goes off? So let's wait, just for a few seconds. Obviously that's quite a bit. But if you go like this, and you just roll it off, see how it doesn't stay in? Just kinda beads up and I can flip it off, and everything. It works really well. And then the back, where it was, totally dry, right? And on this side.

So if you're doing that with normal pad here, it would've soaked all the way through, gone into the subfloor, and kinda made a mess. So if you have pets, or if you're concerned about spills or whatnot, we highly recommend getting the Spillguard pad because it'll keep things high, and make it way easier to clean. If you have any questions about this, comment below. If you like this kinda content, please share it with your friends. Thankful so much, and you have a wonderful day!
