How Do You Feel About Your Productivity?

Whether a mom, dad, pre-parent, or post-parent, I'll bet there are things you'd like to do more effectively. Here are some ways to improve and get the most out of your day.

Get Proper Sleep

It's actually counterproductive when we're tired and pushing ourselves past the point of fatigue, even past exhaustion. Rather than being more productive, fatigue will actually slow us down and hinder out mental capacity to focus steadily on the task at hand.

Eliminate Distractions

In our world of technology there is always something chiming into our personal space, like email, phone notifications, television, games ... the list goes on! Basically, anything that takes attention away from what we should be doing, when we're supposed to be doing it is a distraction.

Cut out distraction potential for as many things as possible. Silence notification sounds by putting your cell phone on airplane mode or silencing the ringer. Turn off the TV and put whatever draws your attention out of sight. Then, turn your mind and senses to the task at hand.

Conquer the Big Frogs First

A good book that explains this concept is Eat That Frog! by Brian Tracy.
Basically, do the tasks that you dread the most first. This may seem odd, but once those tasks are out of the way, there's an uplift to the day and it gets better.

Plan it Out

Create an actionable plan to complete the task. As an example, below is a plan to ease mealtime through the week.

  • Plan a weekly menu around store sales (helps save money too).
  • Check the pantry to know what you already have in the house.
  • Check for other needs in the house, like bathroom toiletries, shampoos, soaps, etc. (saves mid-week emergency shopping trips).
  • Create an organized shopping list (produce, meats, grains, dairy…). In fact, there are some great grocery shopping phone apps to help. Search the app store.
  • Plan store stops and go shopping.
  • Spend time Sunday afternoon doing food preparation for the week.

Git Er Done!

This encouraging and supportive redneck phrase is the main action we need to take, because many times we know what to do and how to do it, but we let everything else take priority. Instead, we just need to get the work done. Does this sound familiar to you?

The Survival Tool You Need in Your Wallet or Shoe

Though we never want to be in a situation where we are incapacitated and cannot respond, unexpected accidents and sudden health emergencies can happen.

Should that ever happen, there are vital details that need to be passed on to emergency and medical personnel. Should no one nearby know you, this tool in your wallet could save your life. If you don't have your wallet with you, like when you're jogging, having this card on your person will help.

On a blank credit sized card (3.5 inches by 2 inches) add the following:

  • Emergency Medical Identification Card
  • First Name
  • Last Name
  • Birthdate
  • Address
  • Phone Number
  • Blood Type
  • Gender
  • Emergency Contact Name
  • Emergency Contact Relationship
  • Emergency Contact Phone Number
  • Family Doctor Name
  • Family Doctor Phone Number
  • Allergies
  • Other Medical Conditions
  • Medications
  • Date the card was created

I hope there is no need to ever use this card, but if there is, then the key people will have the necessary information they require at the right time. Have everybody in the family put one in their wallet.

It's Barbecue Season - What You Need to Know

How are your barbecue skills? Often the fire is too hot before the food gets added. That's easier to adjust in a gas grill by reducing the temperature.

When using charcoal getting the right fire for the type of food being cooked is key. There are five different ways to set up the grill for optimum performance - single-level fire, two-level fire, modified two-level (half-grill) fire, banked fire, and double-banked fire. Plus, the shape, depth, and circumference of the grill may require modification to those five methods.

Learn all the details about these fires.

Other tips to make the experience and clean up superior are:

Brush debris off the grill when it's hot with a long-handled wire grill brush. Do this again after preheating the next time you barbecue to remove any debris from prior meals.

Reduce sticking by oiling the grill with vegetable oil. Soak a paper towel and use long tongs to rub it over the rack.

A chimney starter is great for starting a charcoal fire. Add crumpled paper in the bottom, then fill it with charcoal. Light the paper and the coals are ready in about 20 minutes without the use of lighter fluid.

Have an excellent barbecue season!
