Save Time With These Smart Kitchen Hacks!

The Internet is a great resource for finding time-saving ideas like the ones below to save your sanity in the kitchen.

Spice Jar Labels

When you buy spices, do you transfer them from branded plastic packaging into special glass spice bottles at home? A quick way to label your jars is cut the spice name off the original packaging and affix it to the outside of your spice jar with clear sticky tape, so that the name is readable through the tape.

Peel Garlic

Whether you need to peel a single clove or an entire bulb of garlic, toss it into an empty jar, secure the lid, and shake the jar vigorously. You can even dance around the kitchen as you create your own rhythm! After a few minutes, you’ll notice that the garlic skins have separated from the cloves. All you need to do is dump the contents out, separate the clean garlic cloves, and discard the skins.

Keep Water in the Pot

Prevent a rapidly boiling pot of pasta boiling over that foam and water by laying a wooden spoon across the top. It does keep the bubbling foam in the pot!

Peel Hard Boiled Eggs

Peel hard boiled eggs quickly: after they’re boiled and rapidly cooled in an ice water bath, place them in a bowl that has a tight-fitting lid. Next add some water (about half the level of the eggs), and secure the lid on top. Now, as with the garlic, shake vigorously in all directions for a minute. When you remove the lid, most, if not all, the shells will easily slide away. And if you’ve ever wondered how to cook the perfect egg, here’s a video that shows you how!

There are shortcuts and solutions on the Internet for just about anything. Simply type “how to” along with what you wonder about into a Google search bar and see what you find!

Best way to clean hardwood bevels (Please Don't Use Your Spouse's Toothb...

Hi, Matt Capell here with Capell Flooring here in Treasure Valley. Hey, got another quick tip for you. So, a lot of times with hardwood flooring and things, I get asked ... There's a bit of a concern when you have a beveled edge like this. So, if you take a quick look here, we'll get a close up.

When they have a beveled edge or it kind of points in like that, there's a big concern about how do I clean this area, and a lot of times people will actually not buy these type of hardwoods because of the bevel. And so, I just wanted to give you a quick tip. I saw a customer one time, bless her heart, she had a toothbrush, and she was kind of going through and getting stuff out. And if you can imagine over like a five, 600 hundred square foot house, it was taking her forever.

And my heard kind of went out for her, but the easiest thing to do is most vacuum have a suction only setting or they'll actually say "hard surface," or even say "hardwood" on it. Click that. What that does is, the beater bar that turns like this really fast, it just turns that off, and just vacuum mover these areas periodically and that's really good.

I wouldn't recommend if you don't have that setting, 'cause a beater bar when it goes like this really fast could dull or cause issues with your finish, and so I wouldn't recommend that. But, don't let that be a deterrent from picking something that has a bevel, because, like I said, most vacuums nowadays have a bevel on them, and I would highly recommend on getting them because they're very pretty. Just vacuum your floor, okay?

Quick tip, but if you have any questions, just comment below. Let me know what you'd like to hear about, and I'll address it for you, okay? Thanks so much and have a wonderful, wonderful day, okay?

Is there really carpet that can resist bleach? Capell Flooring Takes a Closer Look

A few years back, I was in my store minding my own business waiting for a sales call from one of our carpet manufacturer’s sales reps.  Often we are showed new samples during these appointments, and they show us new carpet but nothing exciting happens during these visits.  We order some sample books typically of the ones we think you, our wonderful customers, would like best, but not much else usually happens until this one particular visit.

My rep said, “This carpet doesn’t let bleach affect it at all.”  I thought to myself, right.  My first experience that I can remember with bleach was when I was in 5th grade.  I had saved my allowance and bought a basketball t-shirt with my saved money.  Unfortunately, being the active the kid I was I got a large grass stain on it playing football at recess.  I had overheard my mother saying that she used bleach to get out tough stains.  I chose to take matters into my own hands, and put bleach onto my new beloved shirt.  The shirt fabric was basically eaten before my eyes and what was left turned from white to yellow.  ARRRRGGGG, the horror, my new shirt was ruined a week after I got it!!!  I later learned how to mix bleach in with a load of laundry so it would not do this but I did learn to be careful when using it.  Yep, my mom set me straight on how to use bleach with laundry.

Flip the switch back to this appointment, when my rep pulled out a couple of swatches of carpet that had already been applied with bleach.  One was stained like you would expect bleach to do being extremely faded, but the other didn’t visibly look like bleach had been on it at all.  It did, however, smell like bleach had been on it, but the color of the fiber looked undamaged.  I was impressed, but I wanted to do some of my own experimenting.  At Capell Flooring and Interiors, we like to give accurate and honest information to our customers from personal experience, so I ordered a bunch of different carpet swatches, and a large bottle of bleach.  I wanted to experiment with this new claim.  After numerous tests, I found that there are definitely some solution-dyed carpets both made of polyester and nylon that resist bleach.    If you talk to the manufacturer they say that you can use a 50% bleach 50% water solution for really tough stains, but it is still probably the last option when cleaning carpet or spot cleaning.  The reason I say this is because bleach is still a little hard on the backing of carpet even if it won’t do anything to this particular type of fiber.  Several brands have this type of fiber, and please feel free to talk to us about it or stop by our floor covering office in Meridian, Idaho.  Thanks for reading!

Janka Scale - Capell Flooring and Interiors - How hard is my hardwood fl...

How hard is my hardwood? It is all determined by what is called the Janka Scale.

We get asked often by our wonderful customers. How hard is my hardwood flooring? Is my hardwood going to scratch? How do they determine how hard my wood is really? The universal method used to determine hardwood hardness is called the Janka Scale.

We quote, “The Janka hardness test measures the resistance of a sample of wood to denting and wear. It measures the force required to embed an 11.28mm (.444 in) steel ball into wood to half the ball's diameter. This method leaves an indentation. A common use of Janka hardness ratings is to determine whether a species is suitable for use as flooring.” Yes, in simple terms, they basically drop a steel ball into a wood sample and see how much of a dent this leaves. It is a pretty straightforward test. On the scale the higher the number the harder the wood is and the less likely it will scratch.

Hardwood flooring is beautiful and a great flooring solution as long as it is taken care of well. No matter how hard the wood floor is they all scratch to some degree. A good analogy we like to point out if scratching is a concern is the following. Although stainless steel is incredibly strong, even it will scratch.  Common hardwood floors (see chart in post) that we sell in Boise are Hickory (1820), Maple (1450), Red Oak (1290), White Oak (1360), Walnut (1010), and American Cherry (950). Walnut for example is a beautiful floor but it will scratch because it is a softer hardwood floor. Especially with its darker colors the scratches tend to show a little bit more than say a Rustic Hickory will show because hickory hardwood has a various range of colors and is a harder floor than walnut.

Please remember that although hardwood floors will scratch, they are still beautiful, and they add lots of color and variety to a home, and are a great flooring selection. If you ever need to know how hard your hardwood floor is – just look to the janka scale.

Will it be Classic, Modern or Something in Between?

There’s a lot of talk that goes on this time of year about spring cleaning. And cleaning is wonderful – but renewal and brightening are also important parts of spring, and it’s about time we bring those ideas into our home in the springtime.

One big consideration is the art we add to our rooms. In fact, wall art is one of the most cost-effective ways to brighten a room, and it can even become the focal point in the overall success of the room design. Fortunately, there are endless choices available for every design preference and art style. When choosing art as a focal point in a room, here are some things to consider:

Powerful Pieces

Art can be an investment and a reflection of who you are. It also sets the mood of your room, so choose pieces that you truly love and that you know will provide the same gratification for years to come.

Color

As you’re choosing your artwork, think about the space where the art will live. If you want your new artwork to complement your existing design scheme, then look for art that echoes some of the bolder colors in the space. If you choose the artwork before decorating (or re-decorating) the room, then pulling colors or themes from the artwork into the rest of the room will be an important aspect of your design.

Dimensions

Know your room measurements and the size of walls where artwork will hang. If artwork pieces are too big, they can overwhelm a room. If they’re too small, they’ll look lost. Balance can be achieved with a few related smaller pieces, rather than a single larger piece on a wall.

Furnishings and Accessories

Don’t forget to factor in the style of your furniture and accessories when choosing artwork for a room. In a more modern décor, unframed art may create a better effect than traditional framed pieces, whereas ornate frames are better suited to other room styles.

Artistic Style

Art is about what you love. It is available in a variety of styles and materials, including paint, photography, sculpture and more. Take advantage of these styles to enhance your desired décor in the room.

Happy decorating!

Furniture Moving Is Super Important for Carpet but Not So Great for Your...

Hi, Matt Capell here. Hope you're having a wonderful day today. Hey, I got a quick tip that'll help your carpet to last a lot, lot longer, that sometimes we forget about.

So furniture. It's best with your furniture in your house. See for example my house, my wife Patty, she really likes to reconfigure, move things around. I'll come home, it's like a new house, right? She moves it, and she does that because she likes to do things and change it up.

However, that does one thing for our carpet, which is nice. It means we're not hitting the same traffic all the time. I've mentioned this before in other videos, but it's like if you have a spot on your backyard where you walk this path, or say you walk along a ditch or something, all that grass is going to die because it's just hitting the same area over and over and over.

So in the case of carpet and furniture, it's best to move your furniture periodically and create a different walk-path. Move your bed to a different side so you're hitting a different pathway. Move that couch. And I know a lot of people say, "Well Matt, hey I can only have my furniture in a certain way" and that's true, but you can also move your couch maybe even a foot a direction or that, that helps a little bit. It makes so that way you're not just hitting the same area and causing your carpet to lay down and look bad.

So my tip for you today, is to please move your furniture periodically. It'll make for your carpet to last a whole long time, and look so much better.

If you have any questions, be sure to comment, like, share this below. Thank you again so much for taking time to listen, and I appreciate you. Thanks again!

Fast Food, Fine Dining, and Your Flooring Project – Capell Flooring

What in the world does fast food have to do with flooring?  I must admit, I eat fast food, (stay tuned perhaps in a January blog I will swear off on it for a New Year’s Resolution) and I think it would be safe to say we live in a fast food society in a way.  We want things immediately and as quick as possible.  In our store, Capell Flooring and Interiors, we get called all the time by people wanting something today and having it installed the same day or the next.  That just isn’t usually possible, because it takes some time to do a custom flooring project.

I realize that some dealers stock flooring in town, and we stock some things as well too, but I think in most cases when you are remodeling your house, and it is your sanctuary, it is worth it to get what you really want for your flooring.  True, you could take what is in stock, but that limits you to just what somebody else thought was good or that you might like.  You live in a nice beautiful house, and I think that you should put in it what you want, and take a little bit more time to get what you really want.  The difference boils down to this, do you want “fast food” or “fine dining” for your flooring remodel project.

Personally, I think it is worth it to plan ahead a little bit, and allow for the added extra time, especially considering you are going to have to live with your decision on average 7 to 10 years.  So make sure you get and select what you want for your carpet, hardwood, or tile.  If that means that you need to order in your product that is okay, because in the long run, you will be happier with your decision and we hear all the time that people were happy that they decided to wait for what they really wanted.  Thanks for taking time to read this, and we look forward to working with you on your next project.

Vacuums a.k.a Carpet's Best Friend need a little TLC.....Capell Flooring

Hey, Matt Capell here. I'm the owner of Capell Flooring and Interiors here in the Treasure Valley. Anyway, I'm here to talk about vacuums, okay? The vacuum is actually your best friend with carpet because it can help fluff it up, make it look nice. I've heard somebody ask me once, "Can I vacuum too much?" I would say no. It's important too when picking a vacuum to make sure that it ... different carpet mills have different requirements for different vacuums. Some are recommended, some are not. I just wanted to give you a couple quick tips about vacuuming. A lot of times you'll lose suction while vacuuming and I know this might sound silly but this is really important.
First thing to check in this case here, come a little bit closer here. This vacuum's been having some issues because why? It is totally full. We need to dump that. Fortunately for this, this is bagless so it's really easy. That would be the first thing to check. The second thing I would check is ... so many of you probably know I have a house full of daughters and a wife. They have lots of hair and that's a good thing but if you look here very closely, why don't you come a little bit closer? It creates rope. Hair makes really good rope apparently.
It's important to periodically check in here in your beater bar in case something like this ... trust me, usually this is a lot worse. This is the vacuum from work. So if you get some scissors or whatnot like that, I know this isn't the most pleasant thing to do but you gotta pull this stuff out because quite frankly if you don't you'll lose suction and lose power to the vacuum and then it won't pull your carpet back up and make it look nice. Anyway, that's just a quick tip. Pretty easy to fix
Make sure to check your bag. If you have a bagless vacuum it's probably good to dump it out after every vacuuming. The other thing too is to make sure your beater bar is clear. The other thing I would recommend too is if you have a trouble spot with your carpet, it's probably best to vacuum that area a lot slower and to vacuum both this way and that way to really fluff back up the fiber.
Hopefully these vacuuming tips help. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns please do that below and I will promise I'll answer everything that you have. Thanks so much and have a wonderful day.

A Smart Way to Get You and Your Family Organized

When you take a grand view of regular planning, there are at least three levels – monthly, weekly, and daily. Each of these levels reveals a different aerial view of your month.

  • A monthly focus is good for a broad scope of appointments, events, birthdays, and longer-term projects that you’d like to complete over the month.
  • A weekly view is a good way to see a full list of tasks and to plan out your errands and time commitments over a seven-day span.
  • A daily focus is an excellent place to plan out your tasks in 15, 30 or 60 minute time blocks where the action will happen to actually accomplish your weekly and monthly goals.

An online calendar like Google Calendar is useful for your daily, weekly, and monthly planning, especially when you’re doing the scheduling for multiple people in a family. All you need to get started is a free Google email account, and then you’ll be able to create multiple color-coded calendars that all sync to a single view.

The best benefit of Google Calendar is the ability to incorporate multiple calendars for different purposes. For example, aside from your main calendar, you may choose to create a Household calendar to keep track of things like when to change the furnace filter, garbage days, bill payment dates, property tax deadlines, etc.

You may also opt to have a separate calendar for each child in order to keep track of their activities, playdates, game schedules, special school days, recitals, etc. No more pulling your hair trying to remember who was supposed to be at soccer practice and who was supposed to be performing at a piano recital!

Another benefit with Google Calendar is the ability to import calendars from outside sources like Facebook, Meetup, Google groups, or other organizations that use iCal calendar share options. Plus, your spouse and older kids with their own Google accounts can send you a share link for their calendar, and vice versa.

Sharing family calendars is handy to help know where everyone is or needs to be, and to avoid scheduling over another time commitment in the family.

If you’ve never used Google Calendar, here is a short video that shows you how to use the most recent version.

For more ideas about how to keep track of family and household activities, start at 1:00 on this video or see how this woman uses the calendar to organize her life for inspiration.
