Sliced bread, the printing press, or the computer? | E-Neighborhood Advisor

People say the craziest things, and sometimes those quirky sayings make you think. We often hear, “___ is the best thing since sliced bread!” Have you ever wondered what the best thing was before sliced bread?

Otto Rohwedder of Davenport, Iowa, invented the first bread slicing machine, which became available to the world in 1928. It is believed that the phrase “the best thing since sliced bread”evolved out of advertising for the slicer that stated, “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped.”

So, if you were around since before 1928, you might have said, “It’s the best thing since wrapped bread!” Shakespeare may have said, “It’s the best thing since the printing press!” Cavemen may have exclaimed, “It’s the best thing since the invention of the wheel!”

The saying, “The best thing since sliced bread,” refers to something that significantly changes – and improves – peoples’ lives. When it comes to our modern era, maybe we should be saying “The best thing since the computer!” After all, they have benefited our lives a lot!

What is the best thing to improve your life so far? What do you think will make a difference in the future?
