Is your dryer safe? | E-Neighborhood Advisor

When clothes come straight out of the dryer, the warmth and fresh smell can be soothing. What’s better than pulling on a warm, fresh-smelling t-shirt?

But our dryers, if not properly cared for, can catch fire. In fact, 34 percent of home fires caused by a clothes dryer are a direct result of not cleaning lint out of the dryer and venting system.

Here are some simple tips to help prevent fires caused by your dryer.

New
When getting a new dryer have it installed by a professional. Then get familiar with the instructions and warnings in the manufacturer's care manual. Be sure there is a proper dryer exhaust cover on the outside of your home that keeps dirt, debris, and weather out.

Regular Use
During regular operation of the dryer, be sure there is always a lint filter in place when the dryer is operating, and that lint gets removed after each drying cycle.

Maintenance
To further improve the safety and performance of your dryer, quarterly recommendations are to inspect the venting system. Make sure there are no holes, bends, or crushed sections behind the dryer that restrict airflow to the exterior exhaust. Clear lint away, inside and out, from the rear of the dryer venting hose to the exhaust vent out of the house. Finally, ensure that the outside exhaust cover opens and closes as it should when the dryer is in operation.
