Hiring a housekeeper? | E-Neighborhood Advisor

As life gets busier during the fall with things like clubs, sports, school, season events and more, maybe you've thought about ways to reduce your growing list of responsibilities.

One option is outsourcing tasks like housekeeping. Here are some things to consider before hiring someone to help around the house:

Know what you want help with. This helps determine the kind of professional you need. If you are looking for someone to help with outdoor work, then you may need a landscaper; someone to help tidy clutter, you may need a professional organizer; someone to help with general dusting, cleaning, and vacuuming, you may need a housekeeping service.

Know the schedule.
Whether a one-time service or weekly option, verify the service option and scheduling expectations. Be sure that the professional you choose can match your scheduling needs by date or day of the week.

Know your liability – and theirs.
Be sure they are operating in accordance with state licensing requirements for their business and staff and that they are bonded.

Get clear about what is covered by their insurance and your home-owner’s insurance.

Know who will be doing the work.
Is it the business owner, employee, or are they subcontracting? If it is a subcontractor, that will affect insurance coverages for both you and the company. Subcontractors may require separate licensing, insurance and bonding.

Know the price.
Along with price get clear about payment expectations and get a signed contract that clearly defines this along with the detailed work to get done.

Before signing a contract, search for information about the company and workers online. Specifically look for reviews, and ask the company for referrals that you can contact directly.
