4 Keys to Buying the Best Area Rug | E-Neighborhood Advisor

The room is painted, the furniture is laid out, and the décor accents are in place. The hardwood you had installed or updated is gorgeous! Now which runner or area rug will look best? Here’s what to consider.

Size

Sometimes the area rug will be the largest and most central item in the room. You will want to decide on minimum and maximum dimensions, along with the position in the room, so that your area rug doesn’t overtake or get lost in the space. If you haven’t decorated the room yet, sometimes designing the room around an area rug you absolutely love is a good place to start.

Color

The right color to match and balance your room is essential. You can choose monochromatic tones, dual-toned multicolor designs in florals, shapes, and patterns of many styles. For rooms filled with pattern and colors, solids or monochromatic area rugs are often a better choice. You can also choose area rugs in order to complement or extend a signature wall color.

Texture

What we feel beneath our feet is as important as what we see to the overall comfort and hominess of a room. When choosing your area rug, be sure you like the texture of the material it’s made from as much as you like the color and design.
Durability

When choosing a material, consider how well the carpet will withstand expected foot traffic. For example, an area rug beneath the table in a formal dining room will not have as much foot traffic on a daily basis as a runner in the main hall, or an area rug in front of a sofa where your family spends the most time.
The more you consider the intended space for an area rug, as well as the daily wear and tear, the color, and the way it will feel beneath your toes, the more you will enjoy that rug for as long as possible.
