3 Home Decorating Tips | E-Neighborhood Advisor

Decorating our homes is an investment. We want to make our spaces ideal for our lifestyle and families, and we want to do that as effectively as possible. When decorating, or redecorating, here are three key areas to put a lot of thought and planning.

Determine the purpose and functionality of each room.

Decide how you will enjoy life in the space. Will the room be used to watch TV, read, play games, entertain, sleep, work from home, or something else? The purpose and function – making the space fit your lifestyle – is the starting point of all decorating decisions.

Engage all the senses in the space.

From the visual focal point (like a signature wall) to the desired feeling beneath your toes, how do you want the senses to be engaged in the room? Consider everything from floor to ceiling. Choose the colors and the moods they enhance; whether you’d prefer hardwood with an area rug or wall-to-wall carpeting. What will the trim, furnishings, draperies, and accents look like? What textures and finishes will enhance your room?
When choosing furnishings, trim and colors, remember to balance the space. Do this by scaling pieces with open spaces in the room and by considering the impact of areas of adjoining rooms that are visible from the space.

Lighting the mood.

There are many lighting options to consider from natural light to pocket lights, ambient lighting and more. Think about how bright or dim the lights will be and where they will or won’t cast shadows in the room. About light, remember that how the light impacts the walls will also impact the way paint color will look. With that in mind, when testing spots of paint color in your room, remember to test it on all walls at different heights. Then look at those spots during the day and at night to be sure you like the way it looks.
