It is March and as many of you
already know I’m a really big sports fan.
I grew up playing about every sport you can think of from football, tennis,
bowling, baseball, ping pong, but my favorite was
always basketball. When I wasn’t helping
out in the family flooring business, Capell Flooring and Interiors, I
was playing basketball here in Meridian and the surrounding Treasure Valley. With basketball being my favorite, I realize
that I am a little bias, but I really do feel that March Madness is the best
couple of weeks in sports and here are some reasons why.
Cinderella – who doesn’t like the
underdog? We live in the city where our Boise
State Broncos year in and year out do the unexpected and beat schools,
from larger conferences, cities, that have bigger school budgets, but our
Broncos still manage to get
it done in football. In the NCAA
basketball tournament there is almost always a Cinderella story: A smaller school that knocks off a larger
school, and makes a run deep into the tournament.
Unlike with football and other team
sports, upsets have become almost common place during “March Madness.” It seems
like with the 3 point shot has become a great equalizer in college hoops. All it takes is a couple of players or
perhaps even a whole team to get hot from the 3 point line, and a larger
conference school will go down with a loss.
Especially that first weekend, when larger conference schools lose all
the time, which makes experts not look so great when predicting games. Offices, friends, and others fill out their
brackets in anticipation for this sporting event. Everybody asks each other, “How is your
bracket going?” The only games that seem
to be predictable are the 1 vs. 16 games.
Other than that any other team can lose on any given weekend.
This “unpredictability” during
March Madness makes it so exciting to watch.
You never really know who is going to win, and it seems like a large
amount of the games come down to a last second shot. If your favorite team is playing, this can be
nerve racking as exciting when they pull it off. I will always enjoy watching the March
Madness basketball tournament, and I hope this year is like years past with lots
of upsets…..especially with our very own Boise State Men’s basketball team,
led by our great coach Leon Rice upsetting some teams along the way this
year. Let’s go Broncos and have fun with
this exciting once a year sporting event!
Fill out your brackets and have
some fun with this exciting once a year sporting experience. Please feel free to share what your favorite
sporting event is and why – remember please keep the discussion friendly! J
