Is Snoring Driving You Crazy? - Capell Flooring and Interiors

Snoring can be an irritation to bed partners; however, do you know snoring can be the symptom of a sleep disorder that could affect the brain?

We all know what snoring sounds like, but we may not know why it occurs. This annoying sound is commonly associated with breathing issues.

The sounds are produced either from the soft palette, the tongue or both during airflow obstruction. As the muscles relax while sleeping, the area at the back of the throat becomes more narrow or closes off temporarily. That means air passing through the now smaller opening makes the tissues surrounding it vibrate. That’s the sound that can keep a partner up at night.

Factors that may cause snoring are:

  • Extra weight can result in a larger neck and bulkier tissues, making airways narrow.
  • Drinking alcohol too close to bedtime may cause throat muscles to relax.
  • Sinus infections, seasonal allergies, colds, or cigarette smoke can cause swelling in the throat along with a blocked or stuffy nose.
  • A deviated nasal septum, a wall that separates the nostrils in the nose, might be deformed causing snoring for some people.
  • Enlarged tonsils, the shape of a mouth, a long uvula, or a thick soft palate may restrict airflow.

Snoring is a strong indicator of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, a condition that causes people to stop breathing for a few seconds to several minutes, dozens of times an hour. Approximately one out of every two heavy snorers - those who are heard clear down the hall when the door is closed - have Sleep Apnea. However, snoring is not always experienced by patients with this condition.

Researchers even say, people with sleep apnea tend to develop memory problems and some severe health consequences earlier than people without it. So, if you or a loved one snore loudly, or appear to stop breathing while sleeping, visit your doctor to find out if Sleep Apnea is the reason.

Treatment can reduce health concerns associated with sleep apnea.
