If you've decided to freshen up the décor in your home and repaint the walls, preparation is the key to getting that new paint to last. If you don't prepare, that new paint could let you down.

You need to determine if you should remove the old paint. Is it peeling, flaking,
or coming off like a powder when your rub your hand over it? If any of these are true, you definitely need to prepare the walls for fresh paint.

If stripping paint leaves you with images of scaling on the walls in your home with sand paper in hand, don’t worry! While sanding can be an effective way to remove paint, there are far simpler ways to get the job done.

Determine what type of base you're dealing with. Is it latex or oil?

If it's wallpaper, the fresh paint will definitely look better with that old paper stripped away and the wall sanded to ensure no glue residue remains. Yet, there are products to help with that.

Be sure to remove any bumps and repair any damaged areas. There are good primers on the market that easily cover a lot of history on the walls. Some can cover oil paint if you want to use a different type of paint. Others can cover over dark colors and marks with ease, turning your wall into a fresh canvas for new color. Stop into your local paint store for the best product for the current state of your walls.

Finally, in preparing for your new paint, use painters tape to cover what you definitely don't want painted. That could include the trim, ceiling edges, baseboards - and don't forget a drop cloth to protect those floors!

If you do not properly deal with old walls before giving them fresh paint, they will show every mark, bump and divot, and that fresh paint won’t be as pleasing to you or your eyes.

Now the question is, what color are you going to choose?
