Granite, Quartz, and Soapstone Oh My!

With all the surface choices out there trying to select the one that’s right for you and your family can be hard to do. Here are some fun facts about three different surfaces available on the market today that Capell Flooring and Interiors hope will help you come to a decision.

Granite:

Granite is durable and beautiful making it very appealing and popular. Granite is available from countries such as China, India and Quebec just to name a few and color choices are practically unlimited. The price of granite is determined mainly by its coloring and patterns. Granite is porous, and depending on wear, it should be periodically resealed and stains should be wiped up promptly.

Quartz:

Natural quartz is composed of more than 90 percent quartz and then mixed with resin. Quartz is 10 times harder than granite and is nonporous. Unlike the diverse patterns in granite, quartz is extremely continuous, with no dramatic variations in color or pattern. Quartz does not have to be sealed, simply clean it with soapy water.

Soapstone:

Soapstone comes from Finland, China and Brazil and is quarried like granite and quartz. Soapstone is composed primarily of magnesite, dolomite, chlorite and talc. Soapstone ranges anywhere from 300 to 400 million years old, and the talc gives it a soft, warm appearance and touch. One of the really cool things about soapstone is that it is nonporous and it’s impervious to virtually any type of chemical so it’s perfect for forensic and science labs. It completely resists bacterial growth and no sealing is required. During the first month, soapstone should be periodically rubbed with mineral oil to bring out the beauty of the stone and its marbling. Unlike granite or quartz, soapstone doesn't require the extra cost of installing a substrate support.
